STAR WARS DAY! The Force, the Food, & the Fun (May the 4)

THE FORCE
Fun Conversation Starters that point to Jesus (no Jedi mind tricks necessary!)

Talking with your kids about God is one of the most important things you can do! As you watch one of the movies, binge a Star Wars cartoon series, or watch a behind-the-scenes special, take a minute to talk about it with your kids. Anything and everything can lead to a conversation about Jesus, so use these questions to give you ideas, or come up with your own! Just take a parsec to talk about Him, because He's the most important being in the universe!

  1. If you were in Star Wars, do you think you’d be part of the Empire or the Rebellion? Why?

  2. May the force be with you OR May the LORD be with you? If you had to choose, would it be better to have the Lord or the force? Why?

  3. What’s the difference between the Holy Spirit and the Force? Consider these verses:
John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--
1 Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

  4. Do you think being a Christian is more like being part of the Empire or the Rebellion? Why? Think about this verse:
Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
  1. What does the Bible say we should do for those in authority (in charge)?
1 Timothy 2:1-4 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Pray for someone in authority (in charge) now.

  2. What do these verses say about rebelling against authority (going against those in charge)?
Titus 3:1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,
Romans 13:1-3 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.

  3. Is it ever okay to rebel against authority? What do you think?
Read Acts 5:25-29 and Daniel 3:8-30. What does the Bible say about it?
How is this verse different or the same as the verses above: Proverbs 17:11 Evil people are eager for rebellion, but they will be severely punished.

  4. As a Christian, whose side are we on? (the Lord’s)
Listen to this song: God is for Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmMFCMiT-ac
What do you think of these verses? Luke 6:46 Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? John 14:15 If you love Me, keep My commands. Can you be a Christian and not obey God?

  5. "Luke…I am your Father." This is one of the most famous lines from the movies. The question is, who’s your Father? We all have an earthly father, but God, the Creator of the entire universe did something very special for you, so you could be part of His family-so He could be your Father.
The things we did wrong separated us from Him.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
He loved us so He send His Son to die in our place.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
If we receive His Son, Jesus, and accept what He did for our sin, we can be adopted into God’s family…and be His kids!
John 1:12 Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—
You can do that now…you don’t have to wait. God is waiting for you.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Romans 10:9-10 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

If you don’t know what it means to be a Christian or have the Holy Spirit, or you have questions about any of these verses mentioned, reach out to us. We’d love to talk with you!
  1. At the end of the original Star Wars – A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi says, “Remember, the force will be with you always.” How is that like or unlike the Lord?
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Matthew 28:19-10 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

THE FOOD
There is no shortage of Star Wars recipes out there, and now with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge open, Disney’s come up with more crave-worthy concoctions! Here are some fun recipes to try, and how you can use these to start conversations about Jesus!

  • Princess Leia Cinnamon Buns https://www.starwars.com/news/princess-leia-nutella-buns
Princess Leia is most well known for her “cinnamon bun” hairstyle in the original series, but her most famous line is, “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.”
Who is our only hope as humanity (as people)? (Jesus)
Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
As you savor your cinnamon bun, talk about our Savior, and indulge on His Word.
Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.
Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

  • Porg Potatoes - https://www.starwars.com/news/porg-potatoes
To Chewie, porgs aren’t good for anything but food. Enjoy his Ahch-Toian delicacy as you ponder this question: Do you ever feel like you’re not good for much? Think about this verse.
Luke 12:7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

  • Blue Bantha Milk (Smoothies, Ice Cream Milk Shake, etc.) - https://www.starwars.com/news/5-blue-milk-recipes-for-star-wars-day  Their milk was blue, but have you ever wondered why our milk is white? Or why the sky is blue or the trees, green? What about our faces? Why are they different colors?
Colossians 1:16 "For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, …—all things were created through Him and for Him."
Psalm 139:13-14  For You [God] formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.

  • Maz & Cheese (Mac’ and Cheese)- https://www.starwars.com/news/maz-and-cheese-recipe
Maz was old and wise. Where do we get wisdom?
    Proverbs 2:6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
James 3:17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

  • Wookie Cookies https://family.disney.com/articles/chewbacca-crafts-and-recipes/
    Chewbacca is a loyal friend.
What does the Bible say about loyalty (the outcome of faithfulness)?
2 Timothy 2:13 if we are faithless, [God] remains faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.
Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
Proverbs 20:6 NLT Many will say they are loyal friends, but who can find one who is truly reliable?
Proverbs 3:1-3 NLT My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.

THE FUN
Spend time together as a family and make memories! (Take pictures too, or you’ll forget and it won’t count.) Just use whatever you do to point your kids to Jesus!

  • STAR WARS MAZES: (Logic Smart Kids)
    https://cdn-ssl.img.shopdisney.com/content/sd/fwd/May_the_4th_Maze.pdf
God’s love is a-MAZE-ing. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. What makes God’s love amazing to you?

Do you ever feel lost? God would move heaven and earth to come find you. That’s why He sent Jesus-to pursue you (or go after you). He knows right where you’re at and loves you deeper than you know! Read these stories to see what Jesus said about you in the stories of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. Pastor Paul talked about them on Sunday too. Listen to what He had to say here. How is the lost thing like you or not like you at all?

  • STAR WARS COLORING SHEETS: (Art Smart Kids)
    https://www.shopdisney.com/fun-with-disney/magic-moments-activities/

Coloring is so fun, because you get to be creative! If you had to make any creature in the entire universe, what would you make and why? God had a choice of what creatures to make when He made the universe (Genesis 1) He chose to make you!
Psalm 139:14 I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.
Genesis 1:31a God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.
What do you think God made you for?
Luke 10:27 [Jesus] answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.
Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

LIGHT TAG (COME TO THE…LIGHT SIDE?): (Body Smart Kids, People Smart Kids)
Dim the lights and give everyone a flashlight. Select one person to be It. Only their flashlight should be on. As they tag other players, they can turn on their flashlights and begin tagging as well. The game ends when everyone has their lights on.
SAY • The first part of John 8:12 says, “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world.’” How is the game we just played like that verse? Hint: Acts 13:47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us: “I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.”

BEWARE OF THE DARK SIDE GAME:
(Body Smart Kids)
Turn the lights off, but let the flashlight be It. The person with the flashlight will try to “tag” the others with the light. Everyone else should hide and try not to let the light touch you!
ASK • How did if feel when you were hiding? Jesus explained that people love darkness because it helps them hide, but He is the Light of the world.  Read these verses:
John 3:19-21 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
When we believe in Jesus, we become glimmers of the Light in the world. We can shine the truth into places where people want to hide their sin in darkness. God can use us to tell others about Jesus so His light can spread and fill the whole earth!
If you have a sin inside that you’re afraid will be exposed, don’t worry. Read this verse:
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Talk to God about it and make it right.

THE PATH OF LIGHT: (Body Smart Kids)
You need one flashlight and two or more people. The goal is to get from one side of the room to the other with the lights off. The catch is that the person with the flashlight has to sit on the side and the person moving can only step where the light is. If they move the flashlight, and there’s no light in front of you, you have to freeze. If there’s a shadow in the way, you’re blocked. Try to get to the other side as carefully but as quickly as you can. When you get to the other side, you win!
Read this verse and answer the question below. 1 John 1:5-7 This is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
What does that verse have to do with the game we just played?

THANK THE MAKER: (Word Smart, Art Smart, Music Smart)
C-3PO often says, “Thank the maker.” He’s referring to whoever made him as a robot. Who made us?
Genesis 1:27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Psalm 139:13-14  For You [God] formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.
Take a moment and thank God for making you. Write Him a letter, draw Him a picture, or sing a song of praise.
What did God make you for?
Made for This https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVKuOi3YEAM
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
